It’s still surprising that free prescription delivery services haven’t caught on everywhere yet. Especially post COVID, we see how valuable it has become for seniors. Those in senior apartments and 55+ living facilities have been locked down and greatly discouraged to leave home. Many who rely on family are having issues as their family struggles to navigate new schedules with work and school.

Some pharmacies offer to deliver medications for a small fee. For this reason many ask if Medicare or any insurance cover medication delivery. The answer is no. Prescription delivery is considered a service provided by the pharmacy itself and not a covered benefit like the medications. You can get free prescription delivery services typically through your drug coverage or from select local pharmacies who choose to offer this service for free.

You will see that almost all Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (both Part D and Part C plans) offer some sort of mail order drug service or free prescription delivery service. Mail order drug service is typically done from an out of state pharmacy and shipped within a few days of ordering. Now, you could always pick up a medication locally if needed immediately. One thing to account for is that if you do mail order you will almost always need to order three months at a time. The mail order pharmacy will bill and send out only three months at a time for convenience and shipping savings. To get set up for this service you just need to call your health plan and they will work with your doctor to get the information they need get started.

If you cannot afford three months at a time or would like to keep your medications month to month, then you may want to look for local free prescription delivery services. Many may charge a small fee, but we have found that most cities have a handful of local pharmacies that will deliver medications for free.
